Which is better? A Pocket Spring Mattress or A Foam Only Mattress?

One of the common questions we get in R&B Bedding is, “Which is better? A pocket spring mattress or a memory foam (foam only) mattress?” Today, I will break down both pros and cons for each mattress category so you can decide what works best for you and your partner.

Both pocket spring mattresses and foam mattresses have been around for a while now. While these two types of mattresses serve the same purpose: to offer good comfort and support for your quality slumber, there are some significant differences to consider before choosing one or another.

What is inside?

Pocket Spring mattresses compose hundreds of individual tempered coils, and each coil will stand inside a pocket hence pocket springs. It will usually have comfort padding layers on the top, making it a supportive and comfortable mattress.

A foam mattress, on the other hand, is made of polyurethane foam. It will usually have a layer of denser, firmer foam and a softer, more comfortable foam on the top. It also makes a very comfortable mattress to sleep on and absorb energy and body weight well.

Which is better?

Each of these mattresses is good at doing their things, so it is essential to know what type of sleeper you are. For example: if you are a 100kg male and mainly a tummy sleeper or a 50kg female and primarily a side sleeper. Knowing your type helps in choosing the right mattress type for yourself.

Pros going with the pocket springs mattresses

Pocket Springs mattresses are great for people who prefer a more traditional firm, supportive feel mattress. Springs offer lots of responses to our body weight, and it feels like the mattress is holding your body up more than another mattress type. If you prefer a traditional supportive feel bed and tend to move around a bit during the night, the pocket spring mattress helps you move around easier without sinking too much into the mattress. When you are on a pocket spring mattress, the other significant difference will be temperature. A pocket spring mattress has an open structure, and airflow tends to be more efficient on a pocket springs mattress than a thick foam-only mattress. If you are a warm sleeper concerned about the mattress overheating, you can also consider the pocket springs.

Cons going with the pocket springs mattresses

A Full memory mattress is the king of ” zero disturbance when it comes to “motion transfer” and partner disturbance. While pocket sprung mattresses now have very minimum motion transfer, foam mattresses still excel in this area. When comparing pocket springs mattresses with memory foam-only mattresses, the average lifespan for a pocket spring mattress is slightly shorter due to pocket springs responding better to pressure, but it also runs the risks of wearing these coils faster. The average lifespan of a pocket spring mattress will be between 10-12 years comparing to a dense memory foam that could last up to 15 years with proper care.

Like mentioned above, foam only mattress excels in “motion transfer” and partner disturbance. If partner disturbance is a big concern, Foam only mattress performs better than a pocket springs mattress. A foam-only bed will also fundamentally “feel different” from the traditional feel mattress. In comparison, a firm, dense foam mattress may be more comforting and contours better to the body. Your body gently sinks into the bed, and the “hugging” feel will help to ease the pressure off. If you are light and skinny, you often sleep on the side and prefer a softer, more comforting mattress. This could be a better option for you comparing the pocket springs mattress. A well-looked after memory foam mattress could also last longer than a pocket spring mattress! While it is not uncommon to see a 15 16 years old memory foam mattress, we would still recommend replacing your mattress no longer 8 – 12 years since the build-up of our body oils, moisture, and skin cells could end up inside the bed.

Cons going with the foam mattress

Some of the pros of the foam mattress could become a con for some sleepers. For example, sinking into the mattress might limit your movement during the night. If you do move during the night, you might feel stuck in the same spot. The “hugging” feeling might not be for everyone. Even with the newest material and technology, some people still find foam-only mattresses too warm. It could be challenging to move as well. A dense memory foam mattress will be much heavier than a pocket spring mattress also; it could be awkward to move around and roll around like a big piece of jelly.
